Holiday Mondays and the Third Night
A public holiday does not just add a night to a weekend. It moves the quiet evening from Friday to Sunday and changes which one is worth booking.
The third night of a long weekend is usually described as a bonus, which undersells what it does. It does not extend the trip at the end so much as redistribute it. The Saturday stops being the only real evening, the Sunday stops being a departure day, and an evening appears that has almost nothing competing for it.
The Sunday of a three night break
It is the quietest evening a short trip in this city offers. The weekend crowd has largely gone home, the streets are calm by nine, and the following morning is a holiday rather than a check-out. From a booking point of view it is also the least contested of the three evenings by a noticeable margin, which means a specific name is realistic at two or three days' notice rather than the fortnight the same name might want on a Saturday in April.
It suits length, too. Two days of walking are behind it and nothing is in front of it, which is exactly the combination that makes two or three hours sensible rather than ambitious.
What people do instead
They book the Saturday, because Saturday is what a weekend means, and then discover that Saturday was the evening the trip most wanted for itself. The third night sits unused at the end while the busiest evening of the three was the one carrying the booking.
It is an easy mistake because the holiday is at the far end. A Monday off reads as a lie-in rather than as an extra evening, and the evening it actually creates is the Sunday, not the Monday.
The Thursday shape
Not every long weekend is Friday to Monday. An Ascension break runs Thursday to Sunday, and the internal ranking inverts. The Thursday behaves like an ordinary arrival night. The Friday, unusually, behaves like a Saturday, because everybody has taken the bridge day and the city knows it. The Sunday is quiet but it is also the last night before a return.
On that shape the Thursday is the slot with the widest margin in it, which is a genuinely useful thing to know, since it is also the evening most visitors write off as the arrival day.
What the holiday does to the booking itself
Mostly nothing. There is no holiday rate, no supplement and no weekend uplift: an hour is EUR 180 on a public holiday exactly as on a Tuesday in November, and the arrival window holds at forty to sixty minutes across the centre.
Two of the holidays in the year are different, and it is worth knowing which. King's Day and the stretch from Christmas into the new year are treated as peak dates, along with Pride, the Amsterdam Dance Event and weeks when a large conference has taken the hotels. On a peak date, half the fee goes ahead on every booking whatever its length and whoever is asking, and the diaries fill much further out. Easter, Ascension and Whit Monday are not peak dates; they are simply long weekends.
The free move is worth more here
On a two night trip the single free change of date has one alternative to move to. On a three night trip it has two, which makes holding an evening early considerably less risky. Book the Friday on the Tuesday, and if the weekend takes a shape you did not expect, move it to the Sunday for nothing, provided the request lands with more than a day to spare.
A note on the Monday itself
The holiday Monday is almost never the evening to book, and it is worth saying why, because the logic looks inviting. It is quiet, nothing is competing for it, and the diaries are open. The problem is what sits behind it: a Tuesday flight, usually early, and a trip that has already run three nights. A session at nine on the Monday is a session on the night before a departure, with a bag to repack and an alarm set.
The exception is a trip that extends past the holiday, where the Monday stops being the last night and becomes an ordinary quiet one. On the standard Friday to Monday shape it is better used for a walk and an early night, with the booking already behind you on the Sunday.
That is the practical summary of a long weekend: one more night, one more option, and a quiet evening in the middle of it that most visitors never think to use.
