Peak dates, and what they do to a weekend
A peak date is one of the handful of dates when the city fills: King's Day, Pride, the Amsterdam Dance Event, Christmas into the new year, conference weeks.
Most weekends in this city behave alike. A few do not, and those are the peak dates: King's Day, Pride, the Amsterdam Dance Event, the run from Christmas into the new year, and the weeks when a large conference has taken the hotels. The house names them if you ask before you book.
What changes on one
Two things, and only two. Every booking on a peak date carries half the fee in advance, whatever its length and whoever is asking, including a returning client who would otherwise settle on arrival. And the diaries fill much further out, so a name asked for three days ahead on an ordinary weekend may need a fortnight on one of these.
What holds steady
The figures. There is no peak rate, no festival supplement and no weekend uplift anywhere in this business; an hour costs what an hour costs on the second Tuesday of February. The arrival window holds at forty to sixty minutes in the centre as well, although a city full of closed streets is exactly the weekend to plan against the far end of it.
Planning a break onto one deliberately
Plenty of short trips are built around these dates on purpose, and there is nothing wrong with that. It simply moves the whole timetable earlier: pick the evening before you book the flight, write as soon as the room is confirmed, and treat the front half as part of the cost of travelling on a date everybody else also chose.
